And that song you were listening to is a song called “Bones,” and this was written in a time when I was coming out of a career that wasn’t true to me and was causing so much discomfort that I could literally feel it in my bones. It was so uncomfortable.
And that feeling has become somewhat of a barometer for me because I was involved in another project just these last few years, which I started to feel it in my bones. I had this feeling like this wasn’t right, this wasn’t my truth. And so I started to tune into that and managed to leave that project in a graceful way, and this has become one of my personal barometers. And for you it might be something different. But for me it just feels like this deep, uncomfortable energy, which tends to permeate my body when I’m off purpose.
So if you want to check out the full tune, go to iamnickbroadhurst.com/bones. And in today’s show notes at iamnickbroadhurst.com/49 I will post the music video as well, because that music video is stunning. It has won a lot of awards, you get to see me fighting and lots of blood, if that interests you. But it’s actually really beautiful and almost meditative. So definitely check that out.
Now, before we get started, listen in order to this longevity series because I’ve done these sequentially so they make sense. And it’s really important that you start at iamnickbroadhurst.com/40 where I give you an overview of this longevity series and I talk about what the blue zones are of the world, and I will be talking about the blue zones in every episode, including this episode, so it’s very important that you understand what I’m talking about by starting at episode 40.
Then we move onto 41, Move Naturally, 42, Eat Until 80%, 43, Eat More Plants, 44, Get Your Antioxidants, 45, Know Your Purpose, 46, Slow Down, 47, Live A Spiritual Life, 48, Vitamin L, and the 9th and final pillar of longevity is all about Finding Your Tribe.
It’s about connection, community, and surrounding yourselves with those that share your values. This one is so important, because this one brings it together. This is what makes us implement all the pillars, is by surrounding ourselves with people who are supportive of us wanting to make a positive change.
So now you have all the pillars of longevity. You literally hold in your hand many of the secrets to living a long and happy life. Imagine being 100 years old and still doing something you love every day.
For me, that would be music, or writing, or podcasting. I mean who knows, imagine in 60 years, will people look back at podcasts and laugh because we’re just telepathically communicating with each other on mass? Who knows, that would be pretty cool. I’m sure we’ll be way past the point of singularity in 60 years, so personally I can’t wait to hear that because I know the world is going to be a very exciting and a very different place.
Now also imagine being able to not only meet your great grandchildren, but actually play with them. Imagine being that person who your great grandchildren, grandchildren, and children all look up to for your wisdom. Imagine being respected in your community and actually contributing to your own community or tribe. Having a sharp mind, a strong body, and a sense of peace in connection with God, source, love, the universe, whatever you want to call it.
That my friends is all possible. And it all starts now, today. And one of the concepts I really resonated with in the blue zone was the concept of the Moai, which is Moai. Which roughly translates to ‘meeting for common purpose’. And the Moai originated in Okinawa, Japan as social support groups that form in order to provide varying support from social, financial, health, even spiritual interests.
And I love this. They would even pool money together to help one of them Moai members to buy land, or a house. I mean can you imagine your friends pooling money to buy you land or a house today? It’s almost unheard of, right? It doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
I mean we create the rules, we can create whatever world we want to create. And that’s what today’s episode is all about, surrounding yourself with those people who are aligned who would potentially do this sort of thing for you.
Now as a young girl who would be assigned four to five other girls, these girls would become your Moai. So if you grow up in Okinawa, Japan, your parents would literally put you together with other girls and they are literally designated as your Moai.
And you go through life together always knowing that someone will be there for you. And some of these Moai’s have been going for over a century because some of these people are centenarians. Can you imagine the bond that these people share having connected almost every day for over 100 years?
And this is so important in their culture that for many of these Okinawa women it’s become their ikigai. The ikigai is their purpose., their reason to live. They gather each night before supper and have a laugh; they partake in some fun gossip and basically have a way to release stress every day.
And I think that’s one reason that women who are part of the Moai live so much longer than women in the west, because they have this, not only the support, but this daily mechanism of releasing stress.
So this 9th pillar is all about bringing it together. Because finding your tribe is what will make adopting these habits so much easier because everyone around you is doing it. So who do you surround yourself with? Something I want you to think about today.
Are the people you spend the most time with always there for you, no matter what? Are they aligned with your desire for personal growth? Because if you’re listening to The Nick Broadhurst Show, I know that you are on that path. You have woken up to a different way of being. And that is being YOU; no one else, just you in all your glory. To experience life in all its technicolor.
So, I have a little exercise for you today. I would love it if you go through your contacts and think about each person. Do they stimulate you emotionally and intellectually? Are they going to support any new healthy habits that you may want to implement? Are they there for you no matter what? If so, these people can form your own Moai.
So, in your contacts put a big M next to their name. This is kind of your little secret code; M, for Moai. And this code is something that you know that you understand. That becomes like a shortcut to identifying those people that you know have your back.
And even just doing this exercise, even just knowing when you scroll through your contacts to go make a phone call and you see all these M’s popping up, I believe just that visually is going to give you the sort of peace that these ladies in Okinawa experience every day.
It’s just my theory, but I think it’s worth trying. I’m going to give it a go. So pick your top 5 M’s, the people that you want to spend most time with, and now let’s create time with them. Even better, if you can do it together as a group, how amazing, how beautiful. But if not, just create space for you to enjoy each other’s company regularly. Now, you have your tribe. You have your Moai.
So, there you have all the nine pillars of longevity. And how do you start implementing all these without complete overwhelm? The key is to start slow. Pick one or two pillars that you know you are most likely to succeed with and just start there. Perhaps you know you will easily move your body naturally each day and you commit to building this into the rhythm of your days.
Perhaps you already love vegetables and want to start experimenting with new types of recipes that include more veggies, and possibly even replacing some of your animal protein with colorful veggies, if you feel like you’re eating too much animal protein that is.
Is it time to maybe get your antioxidants every day and kick off each day with a big, beautiful, berry smoothie that’s designed just right for you and your body type? And if you don’t know your body type, definitely check out my Ayurveda series, which starts at iamnickbroadhurst.com/21.
Or can you choose sometime each day to create white space and just slow down? Whatever it is, pick one or two pillars and stat today. Because if not now, when?
And that my friends is the end of the longevity series. I hope you really enjoyed it. I’ve really enjoyed doing this because it’s definitely reinforced a lot of things that I love, a lot of things which I’ve been aware of, but may have not implemented as much as I could.
And it’s definitely shifted my diet as well, I must say. I’m still eating animal protein,, but not like I used to. And this has been a natural move I guess away to lighter foods. But it’s just one way that I have started to change because of these pillars. I’m also way more conscious of my own Moai and I can’t wait for the Saturday night where I get to spend time with my soul family, my Moai.
