And that song we were just listening to was my song called Just Us, which is currently playing on the radio in Australia, and one of the lines in that is, “It’s just us. Carve the life we want to live, but we never can forget the greatest lesson is to give.” You can hear that full song at iamnickbroadhurst.com/Justus, and I’m going to be talking today about giving and about success, and we’re going to work towards creating our very own success statement today which is super, super important to get clear on.
And just very quickly; you might be able to tell that my voice is much deeper and much sexier today, and that’s because I’m at the end of my tour. I did the last performance last night in Perth, and my voice just held up until this morning so I just got through it, so bear with me as I come to you with extraordinarily deep tones. So, let’s dive into it.
And you know, it seems almost everyone today is an entrepreneur. It’s an amazing time in history where technology allows anyone to be anything, but I want to talk about first, talk about earning your stripes, because everything these days is available so quickly. It’s an instantaneous world that we live in where instant gratification is just a few clicks away, and what I’ve seen over and over again working with so many women in Melissa’s world, and to be honest, just with my own personal experience, is that there can be an expectation that this instantaneous world can also apply to your success; to achieving success.
And yes, there can totally be overnight success. It does happen, but that’s a tiny, tiny minority, and really, is it quite how it looks from the outside looking in? From my experience, success has always required a leap of faith, and if I go back to my real estate days, man, I had to totally earn my stripes back then, and I wasn’t always selling six, seven, fifteen, twenty million dollar houses.
Yes, I ended up in a very top position in the high end market, but there was a catch: I did have to earn my stripes first selling lots of small things and fighting for my business, but the catch was when I decided to go into the high end market I decided not to sell anything under $3 000 000, so I had to start saying “no” to perfectly good business that would have generated a lot of money.
So, what happened? Crickets… absolutely nothing. So for that first year I made about $60 000 in that first year which was a huge drop in my income, and it put a lot of pressure on me to perform because I was on a ‘commission only’ basis. I had a mortgage to pay, a family to look after, and then the next year, over the next 12 months, it increased by about $180 000, which it sounds like a lot, but it was still a huge drop from where I was at.
And the year after that I ended up being awarded real estate agent of the year in Australia and I had a very solid income to match, but it didn’t happen overnight. I really had to earn it and it did require a leap of faith. It was damn, damn hard, but in that process I never had a strong ‘why’. I never knew why I was doing all this just beyond making money. My ‘why’ was never clearly defined and I’d never really thought about how true success looks to me.
And if you look at Melissa, her career is similar in many ways. She wasn’t always a bestselling author, and she started her blog; it was really just a hobby blog. It was called ‘Path to Wellness’, and this was in a time when blogging was definitely not a career. And what she had was a compulsion to share and just to share her journey authentically. Guess how many people were listening when she started? None. And guess how many email subscribers she had when she started? Zero.
You know, Melissa… it required a hell of a lot of showing up day after day, and for her, it was never about the money. Melissa had a strong desire to share what she most needed to learn herself and it resonated with one person and then two and then 200 and now hundreds of thousands of people around the world, but she had a strong ‘why’. Her ‘why’ was bigger than herself, which we’ll talk about that in a minute.
And if I look at the most successful people that I know; they’ve all had to earn it, they’ve all had to earn their stripes, but they all have one thing in common, they have a strong ‘why’. They know how success looks to them. They all give in their own way. Their ‘why’ is always bigger than themselves.
So first, for success to be manifested in our lives we really need to get clear on how success looks to you; not to someone else, but just to you, and we can do this by coming up with your own definition. And when it comes to success, it’s super easy these days to get stuck in a world of comparison artists where we think we want what someone else has got. And if you work towards that vision that was created by some else, it really becomes your own, and if it does it probably won’t deliver what you’d hoped for.
So, how do you get clear on your own definition of success? And I’m going to give you mine, how it stands right now, and this will change, but for me, this is what feels true to me right now. And this is how it goes; success to me is having the freedom in all there is of my life to constantly create music and content which reconnects people with their heart so they may live a life of purpose and abundance while staying balanced, having fun and living from the heart myself.
That is my success statement. If I can achieve that, live by that, I’m a very very happy man, and you’ll notice I don’t talk about money, specifically, but in there it’s implied that I already have everything I need to thrive within that statement, but the focus is really, really just about being of service.
So once your success statement connects with a higher purpose, it’s bigger than yourself, it adds way more fuel to the fire because the focus is not all on you, and as human beings we all have the same purpose: we’re here to be of service to others in some way, and each of us can do this in our own, beautiful unique way.
You don’t need to feed the worlds’ starving; you can be of service by offering a smile to a stranger. You may be a mother whose mission is to raise your children with as much love as possible, and that is a perfectly beautiful success statement as well.
So, what I want to do is I want to work with you to create your very own success statement. And this is so, so important. This will help you get clear on so many things in your life. And you want to start this statement with ‘Success, to me, is…’ so it’s very personal. You’re putting out there to the world, to the universe, that this is your definition of success.
So, if you’re watching on Instagram live, you can come back and do this later, but feel free to pause this as you write this down or come back later if you’re driving or walking while listening to this, but we’re going to create one line, one sentence or paragraph that says it all.
And while we’re doing that, I’m going to play the rest of my song, Just Us. It takes about 90 seconds, and if you can’t do it in 90 seconds, you may never get around to doing it. You can always come back and refine it later, but for now, just getting something down is really what we’re here to do today.
And so the lyrics in Just Us are, “And everybody knows they’ve got the world at their toes, doesn’t mean you’ll take a chance, but you do.” So, the purpose of this episode is to make that you because it’s your turn to take a chance, and I want this success statement to be that catalyst that helps you get super clear on what success looks like to you.
So now that you’ve got your success statement, what is the very, very first step that you need to take? And I mean just one step, a single, tiny little step; something you can do right now that will move you forward towards your own definition of success, just one step. Just keep it super simple and do it right now.
So that was The Nick Broadhurst Show, episode no. 27, and you can get all of the show notes at iamnickbroadhurst.com/27, and you can also a get full transcript of the show, if you prefer to read.
